The Best Violin Amp I've Ever Played... Is A Bass Amp
I like to test my gear *in depth.* Anything I use regularly needs to pull its weight, and this amp is the most punch-per-ounce of anything I've ever tried for electric (and acoustic!) violin. Introducing: The Phil Jones Bass BG120 PRO.
Disclosure: This amp was sent to me by the good folks at Phil Jones to try out... only after I played through it for almost an hour straight at a trade show. I knew last November: this is probably the best "all-rounder" amp for violin I've ever played. I filmed these tests in January but have been using it ever since, and if you see me live this year I'll probably be using this amp. Come along with me, back to the initial tests, and let's get to know it together.

Thanks for the video! Getting some smooth violin overdrive that doesn’t sound too harsh given all the high frequencies from the bow vs the guitar picks they’re intended for has been a problem I’ve been grappling with for years, and this is so helpful. Your tone at 8:10 reminds me of Sugarcane Harris’ violin tone on some of Zappa’s albums!

Great video, many thanks! I'm experimenting with the octave down on the ME80 (the effect on the expression pedal) which is ok. Is there any way to hear less of the 'ambient' sound on my electric violin - all I hear is octaves rather than just the octave down pitch.
Thanks for watching! If I'm reading correctly, you'd like less of your dry signal, and more of the suboctave? If yes, you can control the balance of each octave using the three knobs in that Comp/FX1 section-more of the first two knobs (-1 and -2 oct), and turn down the third knob (direct). Hope that helps!

Had one of these, had to sell as I am not a violin player. Absolutely beautiful to look at and did sound real good.

Having a cheap noisy loudspeaker with delay under my left ear would necesstitate ear plugs, which kinda sucks..
Thanks for the comment. I'm happy to report that the Volta's speaker is neither cheap nor noisy (at least, not in terms of noise floor... it's designed to produce sound but I'm not sure what you mean otherwise.) I like the way it sounds, and sometimes the stage volume on shows I play necessitates wearing ear plugs anyway, so YMMV 🙂
@@RobFlaxMusic noisy as in loud. Perhaps repositioning the speaker further away from the ear would be better.
Ah! This you don't have to worry about any more than you would on an acoustic violin (although there's an argument to be made for hearing protection even for orchestral violinists...) The speakers give some monitoring in a way that's similar to an acoustic instrument.@@mikeregan3265

Theoretically your Zoia could do some of this already, albeit in a not particularly user friendly package 🤔 Still on my wishlist, that thing 😅
Lol! I would be hard-pressed to get these sounds out of the Zoia... I've been happily using Zoia for years now as a big part of my "fly rig", and... I don't know if it's possible to get these sounds from that pedal. The long memory of the tapographic is maybe closer to the Chase Bliss Habit, but not in stereo... I definitely should mess with trying to get some "filter clicks" like the SMR (but again, I really am not sure...).
